Director's Notes
Taking A Shot was a brainchild of mine that was written, casted and shot in the span of 2weeks, with no budget and a tiny crew. It was a highly stylised film following a socially anxious alcoholic, Simon, who'd turned to alcohol to convince his mother, who'd popped by for a surprise visit, that he was going to rehab and everything was just fine.
With upbeat, fast cuts, weird angles, hard lighting and exaggerated drunken behaviour, Taking A Shot attempted to comically explore the relationship between one's perception of self and one's actual self in a state of inebriation, and also the extent to which parental pressures could imbalance mental stability. Heavily character driven, this film really developed my skills as a director working with actors to help them fully embody the role of their character.
Given the limited space and time, the film also tested my ability to make use of a mundane location and try to turn it into something more appealing, both visually and narratively.
