Director's Notes

Revontulet was a film I'd co-directed alongside two close filmmaking friends of mine, one of which was the creator of the very initial concept of the film.

Revontulet was a commissioned work under a university partnership with the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, and the requirements of the project was that they were child friendly and made with the purpose of screening them during medical treatments in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, so that they could take their mind of their treatment for those fleeting moments.

What came of it was a stop-motion animation film loosely based on an old Finnish folklore about a firefox whose running caused sparks that eventually became the Aurora Borealis. Made entirely by hand and by film students who had no experience in making stop-motion animation, we sought help from our university's animation department, and after hours of hard work came up with this short 2min film.

There were a lot of mistakes that we'd made, but looking back on it now, there is still a lot we are proud of for our first ever stop-motion film. And let it never be said that we do not appreciate the hard work of stop-motion animators - because even if we didn't then (we did, but I'm trying to prove a point), we definitely do now.
