Director's Notes

Monster was a film I set out to accomplish, following my own personal struggle with body image. Setting it in a way that turns that trope a little on its head, I gave myself a high order to make a film with full face Special Effects Makeup (on a child, no less), a minuscule budget, and a mere 4-day shoot.

What came out of it all was an approximately 10min film that I have mixed feelings about. With the end product that I have, I was proud of the look and aesthetic of the film, of the general atmosphere and setting that I'd placed the film in. What I found myself wishing I'd done better, was focused on developing the relationship between mother and son a bit more, to explore more of the nuances in a relationship between mother and child, that I initially tried to accomplish but did not quite succeed in. I'd placed so much of my focus on the look and feel of the film that I'd forgotten to fully develop the narrative and character relationship to its full potential, and that eventually is what I'd ended up not quite accomplishing.

Looking back on it now, I have no regrets making Monster, knowing that I'd learnt a lot as a writer and director, and that I'd forged strong working relationships with a hugely talented group of people that I'd work with again in a heartbeat.

Monster, despite having been shot in April of 2018, was only completed (due to post-production complications) in February of 2019.
