Director's Notes

A collaborative project with postgraduate students of the university's sound composition course, DisQuieted was one of my first forays into experimental filmmaking. The guidelines of the project we were given was to do an experimental interpretation of the painting, The Scream, and thus we decided to do a film exploring the inner workings of irrational fears.

Working with three non-actors who were actually our composers, I had to take a different directing approach - talking them through various actions and expressions I wanted to bring out of them, working with different levels of emotion and situational descriptions to tease out the desired action.

As the editor of the film as well, I took it as a chance to experiment with different overlays and editing styles throughout the film, using building rhythms, pacing and colours in an attempt to bring about the fear each actor was feeling about the mundane objects they were staring at.

Looking back, I would have edited it a lot differently, trying instead to bring about a strong juxtaposition between the fear the actors were feeling and the simple, unthreatening nature of all the objects, instead of trying to portray the objects as intimidating as well. Composition-wise, I also wish it could have gone with a more subtle approach, instead of one as dramatic as the one we ended up with.

In the end, though, it was a good experience working with professional composers and learning to think about the edit with regards to the composition and rhythm of the film.
